Learning to lead using leader placed protection is a defining moment for any climber wishing to advance beyond seconding a partner. It is perhaps the most important time to get expert tuition and at Keswick Mountain Adventures we know how to safely teach the vital skills you need to make this important step. Covering everything from selection of protection and ropework to understanding guidebooks and choosing routes, you should leave Keswick Mountain Adventures with a confident understanding of the principles and skills of lead climbing.

Our highly trained and AMI certified instructors have years of experience of teaching climbers the necessary skills required to lead climb. All of our rock climbing instructors hold the highest level of professional qualifications in the sport so you can be sure you’re hiring the best in the area.

placing gear Screwgate or snaplink, hex or cam, H.M.S. or wiregate, wire or skyhook, bolt or piton? The vast array of equipment available to a climber may seem a little daunting and when you’re leading and at the crux you want to be confident you’ve got it right, whatever grade you climb at. Our instructors will guide you through the complexities of placing protection and will be alongside you as you climb to offer advice and reassurance about gear placements and rope management.

A full range of technical equipment and expert instruction as to how and when to use it will be at your disposal. Should it all get a little unnerving we can instantly offer you a top rope should you need it, or maybe a few words of encouragement should suffice to get you moving again. Once at the top placing anchors and establishing a belay will be covered, as will climbing calls and the management of your ropes as your second follows you up.
